Smart Kitchens – the difficult corners

Modular built-ins are a type of furniture that is affixed to the walls or floors of a room. In an effort to maximize work surface and create a practical blend of interior architecture and the needs of a functional kitchen the L-shaped and U-shaped kitchens seemed a great idea. And they were, except that the one or two corner scenario posed big problems.

Smart Kitchens: The appliance garage

The notion that kitchens are machines for living originated roughly in the 50’s and had fully developed in the 60’s, when the cooking space was perfected to an unprecedented efficiency. But what we now take for granted has not always been so.

Multicolour + white in Contemporary Interiors

Contemporary style is often daring with furniture and built-ins colours and surprisingly conservative with window treatments. The stripes and patchwork for instance are used everywhere from rugs to furniture, to upholstery.   Saturated tones of red, blue even purple and are accepted and part of the contemporary aesthetic.   This kitchen borrows the baroque blue and…

IKEA Shopping finds

Ikea shopping in November is fun. All these interiors already set up, nothing to do but look for yours and take it home! Although I wish blackboards were that clean and neat when taken home; they have a mysterious way of getting too full. The closet section always my favorite. Some of these sliders are…

Contemporary home in construction, Thornhill

One of the nicest characteristics of contemporary homes is the vastness of the windows. In this home here, we’ve picked up on this and carried it throughout the interiors in the brightness of wall colour, the glass railing, the breeziness of space around the fireplace. Here are some of my favourite german brands: Alno: Bulthaup: Hacker: Here is…

Sibiu, Transylvania, Unesco – work in progress!

What a wonderful business trip it is when you visit a fantastic city, work with amazing people and eat lots of great food! That pretty much summarizes my recent trip to Sibiu, Romania. Our project there is shaping up quite nicely, here a sneak peek: the courtyard is getting there, probably last to be paved due…

Work area therapy – in the kitchen

Why have a counter, a backsplash tile and a simple duplex plug under the typical upper cabinets full of glasses and plates – just because this is standard and this is how it’s done. Love this simple and yet so different work area: backsplash – tile on one side + stone and beautiful view to the…

2016 Kitchen Trends in residential design

According to the design panel at the IDS 2016 Toronto, here are the trends + my take on them! Most of them do come from Europe and I have to say some of them have been around for… a while, over there. As a child and youth I actually saw some of these in real…

Patterns and patterns

Much to be said about patterns. Not for the shy at heart. All is true – they are fabulous! and not used enough. Despite their appeal, sometimes they’re hard to integrate. A couple here, translated into tile.
