Three tips for chores made easy when it comes to rug maintenance

I love rugs. They are nice on your feet and make barefoot walking a great sensorial experience. They enhance your tactile connection to your home in a direct and natural way.

Aesthetically, any room can go from elegant to fun by swapping a rug and not changing anything else in it. This is particularly useful when you’re looking to change that teenager’s den into a new family room as they are trotting along to college and you can finally take over that bit of real estate that will not be used daily.

Yet there is nothing more frustrating than having that drip of sauce stuck to it or find the wine smudge the day after a party.

Tip number 1

It all starts with the purchase. Do not buy anything that does not fit your habits and accident-prone home conditions unless you are prepared to deal with them.

Tip number 2

How you deal with stains does not have to be a psychological burden

Having stains is not necessarily a bad thing – I know… I can hear you gasp! But unless it’s a major spot in the middle of the carpet, anything else can be forgiven and hidden with a bit of repositioning or, even moving the rug into a different room.

So relax, give yourself the room to live with a bit of imperfection, mentally embrace the stains, and get used to adjusting yourself, not the rug.

Tip number 3

Think before you clean. A lot of times the cleaning products make more damage than the stain itself. Be prepared and have specific carpet cleaners handy. Do not use the hard brush at the end of some of the spray can cleaners because it is often too abrasive and it will destroy the piling in the carpet fibers making it more visible.
